The Hidden Golden Hues Within Dallas Winston

Hey everyone. Welcome to my first blog about the Outsider, by S. E. Hinton. Today, I'm gonna talk to you about a fan favourite character, Dallas Winston, or Dally.

We find out Dally lived in the wilder parts of New York, and was arrested often after the age of ten. He is said to hate the world, and fight for fun.

Dallas acts different in almost every scene we meet him in. He changes between harsh, and a tough love person. Through the book, Dally has two personas that he changes like he changes clothes. These personas act like a shield for Dallas to hide behind, away from what he has been through and what he has seen. In psychology this is called masking.

In a rare moment where he unmasks, he shares to Ponyboy and Johnny that "You get hardened in jail. I don't want that to happen to you. Like it happened to me...". I see this as a way of trying to protect his true family from becoming like him.

 S. E. Hinton wrote an incredibly emotionally diverse character, and this is proven again and again in the book. Please remember to follow, and comment if you want more Outsiders psychology, and what you want to see next. Until next time stay looking at the golden hues of life.

  1. Omg I love this take on Dally!! 🤯 The whole “masking” thing makes so much sense, like he acts all tough but deep down he actually cares so much. That quote you picked gave me chills fr. I’d be so keen to see you do one on Johnny next—he’s just as layered. Can’t wait for the next post!! 🌟
